Each year the Catholic Church marks the anniversary of Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical Laudato Si’. From the 19th – 26th of May the global church celebrated what it means to care for our common home. The theme of Laudato Si’ Week centred around ‘seeds of hope’ which calls us all to consider how we can plant and nurture seeds to be the hope that the world needs during this time of suffering for our planet. Many of schools joined in the celebrations through prayer and action.

At St. Michael's Nowra the WEN Eco Ambassador students were given an opportunity to talk with Uncle Vic Channell and Dr. Beth Motts. They yarned about the habitat of the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoos and how we can care for them. Dr. Beth Motts, a Threatened Species and Ecosystems Officer from Environment NSW also discussed the importance of planting native she-oaks for the Glossy Black Cockatoos. The students then planted and watered the she-oaks that were donated by Environment NSW into our Black Cockatoo Garden.

Year 6 also were involved with Catholic Earthcare Laudato Si’ Week Q&As 30-minute sessions on Zoom where students discovered how Caritas is responding to the messages in Laudato Si', asking questions about what Laudato Si’ is, and taking action through the Together We Can campaign activities.

At St Columbkille's Corrimal as part of the Laudato Si' Week celebrations, the Year 4 B students performed “Let it grow” from the Lorax. This is a song about respecting and caring for the environment.
